Mayor’s Report For December 2008

We are almost at the end of another year; 2008 sure went by fast. Looking back, this past year turned out to be a good one. Because of the Holdingford Lions Club and support of other individuals and organizations, the Wobegon Trail Covered Bridge has become a reality. We were also able to repair some of the sidewalks in the city this year. We hired a new maintenance employee who has hit the ground running. We invested in some new street sweeping equipment and the maintenance department did some much needed curb painting and landscaping around the city.

Because of the State’s present and future deficits, the coming year could be much more challenging for us as a city. We have just been informed that the Governor and Legislative leaders are meeting now to decide how to manage this year’s deficit, and one item on the table is reducing the second half payment of our 2008 Local Government Aid allotment which we are due to receive next week. If this payment is cut it will be impossible for us to make up for it in this year’s budget given the fact there are only two weeks left of this year. That means this coming year, 2009, our finances will be short changed right from the beginning. And to make matters worse, the 2009 legislature will need to find a way to plug a huge deficit in the next biennium, which may mean more cuts for cities and counties. We could have a couple of lean years ahead of us.

Congratulations to Andrew Piasecki for earning his Eagle Scout award. Andrew’s Eagle project was the building of the skate board park ramps in Veterans Park. Only a few hardworking and determined Boy Scouts reach the rank of Eagle. Good job Andrew!

On behalf of the council, the city and myself, I would like to publicly thank Dick Paggen for his 10 years of community service, serving as a councilperson. We thank you for your dedication.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and safe, healthy New Year!

Mayor’s Report For November 2008

The Holdingford Garden Club will be doing their annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, Friday, November 28, (the day after Thanksgiving) at 6 p.m. at the water fountain garden across the street from the funeral home. Everyone is invited to come out and join the fun in helping the Garden Club kick off this years’ Christmas season. In addition to the tree lighting, there will be caroling, cookies, and hot cider. What a great way to start the Holiday Season!

After 34 years of dedicated service to the City of Holdingford, Friday, October 31, was the official last day of city employment for Herman Ebnet. On behalf of the citizens of Holdingford, I would like to thank Herman for the many years of service to our community, and wish him well on his retirement or graduation as he likes to call it. Congratulations Herman!

After careful review by the Council, taking into consideration the positive recommendation given by maintenance supervisor Jerry Schueler, the Council for the City of Holdingford has moved Jeremy Freudenrich from a six month probationary employee status, to permanent full time maintenance employee. Jeremy has demonstrated that he has the ability to learn and handle all facets of city maintenance, and we feel he will be an asset to the City Holdingford. Please join me in welcoming Jeremy as a permanent staff member to our community. Welcome aboard Jeremy!

Our snow plow truck probably won’t pass D.O.T. inspection next year unless we do a lot of expensive repairs to it. The cost of repairs would be more than the truck is worth. Since there hasn’t been much snow these last few years, we were hoping we could make the truck last until 2011, but the salt has been rusting the box frame to the point that a whole new frame would have to be installed. We are going to try and find a good late model used plow truck, new ones are way too expensive. Years ago bigger cities and counties would trade in good trucks on a regular basis making it easy for small cities to find good used trucks. But with these budget shortfalls cities have been experiencing these last few years, a lot of the big cities now keep there trucks until the wheels are ready to fall off. But I am told good used ones do become available from time to time, and we just need to keep looking, we have a year to find one.

Since we are talking about snow plowing, November 1 thru April 1, is when our snow removal parking rules go into effect. NO vehicle is allowed to park on any city streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. every day during these months. Everyone’s cooperation in regard to this ordinance is greatly appreciated or risk getting ticketed.

Mayor’s Report For October 2008

I want to first start out with an apology to the Holdingford Lioness Club. I forgot to mention in the September Mayor’s report, the delicious cookies they made for the Holdingford area picnic. Thank you Lioness members for making and bringing those good cookies. I’m sorry, I hope my forgetfulness does not deter the Lionesses from bringing cookies to next year’s picnic, we need those cookies!

A picture of the Lake Wobegon Covered Bridge taken by Kari Ebnet will be on the 2009 St. Cloud Times Calendar. There were 800 photos submitted, which were narrowed down to 50, which were then voted on with the top 15 getting the honor of being placed on the calendar. The bridge was one of the 15, WAY TO GO KARI! The Calendars can be ordered from the St. Cloud Times.

The two sidewalk projects are well under way. Actually the Washington street project is nearly completed. The sidewalk and curb itself is done, it’s just a matter of filling in the tar along the curb and doing some landscaping. The Plymouth and Second Streets’ sidewalk project is also coming along nicely. It was a little more challenging for the contractor in removing the old sidewalk and curb on Plymouth. Much of the old curb went under the street, causing more asphalt breakage when removing. Also there appeared to be three layers of cement in front of Heart and Sol and the old Laundromat, which explains why the sidewalk was so high there.

Holdingford Lioness member Mary Stalberger, who is in charge of the Holdingford Area Food Shelf, has informed me the food shelf is seeing a lot of use in these tough economic times. Consequently, its food stocks are depleting rapidly. I would like to thank the Holdingford/Upsala Boy Scouts for their annual “scouting for food drive” which brought in 589 food items and a big thank you to all our area citizens for donating food to the scouts to be brought in to the food shelf. We are going to need a lot more to hold people over until this economy gets better. Opatz Metals is helping out by paying extra per pound for aluminum cans, if you bring in non-perishable food items. And if you wish to donate all the proceeds from your can sales to the food shelf, Opatz Metals can help with that also. Food and cash donations to the food shelf can also be brought to the City Center during normal business hours.

Dates to remember this month. Herman Ebnet’s retirement party is Sunday, October 26, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion, with the program starting at 1:30. Come on out and thank Herman for his 34 years of service to the City of Holdingford.

Meet the Candidates Night will be Monday, October 27, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Holdingford City Center. A good time to come out and meet the candidates who are vying for state and local offices, and see where they stand on the issues.

I will not be in my office Monday night October 20th, but will be again October 27, before meet the candidate’s night.

Mayor’s Report For September 2008

The third annual Holdingford area family picnic was again a huge success. Approximately 400 people ate a delicious lunch put on by the Lions, and Lioness Clubs, featuring Don Breth’s slow roasted pork sandwiches. The Holdingford Fire and Rescue Department had a safe house set up, showing how to recognize hazards in the home and how to prevent them. This house also had the capability to replicate a fire so children and adults can learn how to safely exit a burning home. The Holdingford Sportsmen Club had a children’s fish casting contest giving out rods and reels and other fishing gear to the winners. Helping Hands had their surrey bicycles there. The Holdingford Historical Society ran the bingo parlor giving out prizes to the winners. There were children’s games, and steer judging contest and great music provided by the Ostendorf band. People who stayed all day did not have to worry about going hungry because the Pedals to Petals Garden Club served watermelon provided by the Lions, and also had ice cream treats, the Holdingford Women of Today served up root beer floats, and Stearns Bank employees popped corn all day. On behalf of the whole community, I would like to thank all the organizations and individuals who had a hand in making this picnic a great success, Thank You!

The City of Holdingford has completed its preliminary budget for 2009. Again we have not raised the tax levy; in fact, it has been kept at $258,663 since 2002. Some of the highlights in the 2009 budget are; we will receive $5,204 more in local government aid in 2009, but the increase in fuel costs for buildings and vehicles next year will use the majority of that increase. We added $1,000 to the Parks Department budget for the Garden Club. The Garden Club works hard and does such a wonderful job keeping our parks beautiful, that the council has decided to spare them the extra work of fundraising. And this $1,000 will also qualify for a dollar for dollar match from the Initiative Foundation if used for non-capital expenditures. There will be no election next year which will save some dollars. We added a $200 increase to the Fireman’s Relief Association; this is subject to Township approval in January. We set the Liquor Store’s goal at $16,556. And the best news of all, we will be making the last bond payment on the City Center in 2009! Other then changes listed above, the 2009 budget is close to the same as this year’s budget. Copies of the 2009 budget may be picked up at the City Center during normal business hours. We encourage all residents of the City of Holdingford to look it over and give us your feedback.

The Minnesota Department of Health was in Holdingford checking our water system. Again they determined there is not enough chlorine in the water that reaches the edge of the city. Maintenance did some checking and found one of the chlorine pumps was not always doing its job. Council has approved the purchase of a new one. Both chlorine pumps are now new, and hopefully this should solve the chlorine problems we have been experiencing these past few months. Again as before with the added chlorine boast, the water will be discolored for a short time. Please bear with us and just let it run for minute or two and it will clear up.

Please note, because October 13th is a legal holiday, the next regular council meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th.

Mayor’s Report For August 2008

Sunday, September 7th, is the annual greater Holdingford, Opole, St. Wendel, St. Anna area community picnic in Veterans Park in Holdingford.  Everyone living in the Holdingford School district is invited to attend.  There will be food, entertainment, games and good old fashioned fun.  The area organizations will again have displays showing what they are doing in the community, and answer any questions you may have. Their hope is you will consider joining one of these fine organizations.  Please thank the members of these nonprofit organizations when you see them for the fantastic work they do in this community, including putting on this picnic.

The Pedals to Petals Garden Club is at it again. They have made more improvements to their flower garden by the trail across from the funeral home.  They have built a pond using stainless steel and field rock, and have put their cascading water fountain and some water flowers in the middle of it. The stainless steel sheeting was donated by Polar Tank Inc. and employees of Two Rivers Enterprises donated their time to weld it into the shape of a pond.  Members of the flower club, with the help of Herman and his skid loader, and Mike Odden lined this pond with field rock inside and out.  Tim Berscheid and Clary Fowler donated the field rock. The pond is situated between two cement and granite benches that Jon Halverson made last year in memory of his mother Marlene Halverson, and former City Clerk Patty Paggen.  On behalf of the community I would like to thank the Garden Club, Polar Tank Inc, Two Rivers Enterprises, Herman Ebnet, and Jon Halverson, Mike Odden, Tim Berscheid and Clary Fowler, for their donation of time, talent and materials to make this project a success.

The Holdingford Lioness Club has scheduled a “Meet the Candidates Night” Monday, October 27, at 7 p.m. at the City Center.  This is the time to come out and meet our local and State election candidates and find out where they stand on the issues.  It’s a good way to be an informed voter.

We have been informed by the State, that our Local Government Aid will increase $5,204 to a total of $158,210 for 2009.  It’s still not back up to the 2003 level, but it’s at least increasing.

People from out of town have been inquiring about overnight lodging in Holdingford when they come to bike the Trail.  It sure would be nice if we had a bed and breakfast in town, hint, hint.

The Central Mn. Council on aging and the State of Minnesota has been sending me statistics on the aging of America and how communities should be preparing for it.  Did you know that by the year 2020 there will be more senior citizens in Central Minnesota than children in school?  A survey done by Central Mn. Council on aging has shown that 54% of communities in Minnesota have not begun to prepare for the aging of the baby boom generation.  Because of the Helping Hands Outreach to Elders organization, this community is already doing many of recommended activities to prepare for the future population age shift.  Thank you Helping Hands.

Mayor’s Report For July 2008

This year’s Holdingford Daze celebration was fantastic as ever, it seems to get bigger and better every year.  We had some weather related issues Friday and Saturday nights that put a little damper on the festivities, but altogether it looks like we had a very successful event.  I would like to thank members of the Holdingford Daze committee along with all other individuals and organizations for all the hard work and planning it took to put on this successful event.  I also would like to thank the organizations, churches, and individuals who sponsored the various events, which contributed to this successful celebration, THANK YOU!  The Holdingford Daze committee will be meeting again soon to go over this year’s celebration and start planning for next year.  We are always looking for new members with new ideas to join the committee.  If you wish to join, contact Mary Stalberger, Karen Solarz, or myself.

As I have stated before, Herman will be retiring October 31, 2008, after 34 years of dedicated service to the Holdingford Community.  Everyone is invited to a retirement party for him at the Legion, October 26, at 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the program beginning at 1:30 p.m.  By law a City cannot use taxpayer dollars for this event, so we must rely on donations to cover the cost of the food, retirement gift, etc.  If you would like to join me in donating to this worthy cause, please bring your donation to the City clerk’s office or put it in an envelope marked “Herman’s retirement party” and put it in the utility bill drop box at the City Center.

The Community Country Church has set up an office on Main Street, and they are in the planning stages of building a new church across the street from the school.  On behalf of the Holdingford Community, I would like to wish the Pastor and members of this congregation success in their future plans, and thank them for making the Holdingford community the home of their new church.

Elections for various state, federal, and local offices are this fall.  The filing dates for city council and mayor offices are from August 26 thru September 9.  You can file for these positions at the City Center.  We have attached to the July council minutes, information on a one day workshop called “Running for Public Office” the Initiative Foundation is offering.  It gives those who are considering a bid for public office a chance to get a taste of political life.

Artist Frank Gosiak has been painting murals on the box car in the Wobegon Park.  These stunning murals depict the history of the railroad along with the Holdingford area.  If you get a chance, take a look at this beautiful work of art.

It has been brought to the H.I.P. committee’s attention that for most people it’s cheaper to call Upsala at 7 cents a minute than to pay the phone company $6 a month to call toll free.  There will be a petition circulating asking Qwest to remove the $6 charge from our monthly phone bills.

On behalf of the City of Holdingford I would like to commend Opatz Metals on the wonderful cleanup effort they are doing at their business especially by the new bridge.  It’s good to see people taking pride in their community.

Mayor’s Report For June 2008

The Covered Bridge is nearing completion, the Army Reserve has finished its part of the construction and the Lions Club members and other volunteers are putting on the finishing touches, such as trim and benches.  If you haven’t seen it yet, take a walk or bike down and have a look. It’s a beautiful covered bridge, a work of art this community can be very proud of.  Again on behalf of the whole community, I would like to take this opportunity to Thank the Holdingford Lions Club for spearheading this project, and also Thank all the organizations and individuals who made this project possible with their donations of time, talent, and money.  Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
[The dedication of the bridge will be this Saturday June 14, at 8 a.m. taking place at the north end of the bridge. All are welcome.  This will be followed by the Caramel Roll bike ride at 9 a.m.]

We had a meeting with officials from Excel Energy in regard to bringing Natural Gas to Holdingford.  The good news is, there is considerable savings at this time in heating with Natural Gas versus propane or fuel oil.  The bad news is, because geographically the City of Holdingford is not located near any major natural gas pipe lines, we would have to pay for the infrastructure to bring the gas in to the City, and we are talking many millions of dollars.  Bonding the whole amount would be prohibitive.  We would need to raise taxes considerably to make the payments on a bond this size.  But we can’t just do nothing, the cost of energy is rising fast, and if we want to attract more business to Holdingford and keep the businesses we already have, we need to be able to provide energy at the same costs as other communities so our businesses are able to compete in today’s market.  Also a homeowner in Holdingford should not have to pay more to heat their homes versus a homeowner in other cities, just because of our geographical location.  We are going to try and find other sources of funding to pay for the majority cost of this project; our economic growth depends on it.  It’s getting late and a project this size will not happen this year anymore so those of you who were planning changes to your homes to accommodate natural gas please be aware this will not happen this year.  I also cannot say when this will happen, we just have to try and hope for the best.

Our annual City wide cleanup is Saturday, June 21, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.  We have lowered the prices of some items this year to entice more people to bring in their unwanted stuff to help keep our City clean.

On the subject of clean, we would appreciate you NOT blowing your lawn clippings onto the street.  Our City maintenance crew works hard to keep our streets clean and presentable, let’s help them out by doing our part in keeping our grass clippings on our own lawns.

Mayor’s Report For May 2008

The Covered Bridge will be finished or close to completion this Sunday May 18th.  There will be a presentation and dedication at 1:P.M.  I’m hoping for a big turn out to thank the Holdingford Lions Club for their leadership role, the other organizations and individuals for their hard work and contributions, and the Army Reserve for the excellent construction job.   I believe we are witnessing history being made here in Holdingford; a hundred years from now this bridge will still have an impact on this community.   My understanding is there will be another dedication at the beginning of the Caramel Roll bike run, so if you can’t make this one please plan to attend the one on June 14th.  A big Thank You to everyone who participated in the community workday May 3rd.  Trees got planted and boards got stained and people had fun doing it.  Look for pictures of the workday and bridge construction on the City website: www.holdingfordmn.us

The Holdingford Fire and Rescue Department has saved the City of Holdingford almost $5,000.  Holdingford’s water tower, like most water towers, sweats during hot days in summer.  When this happens, mildew starts to grow outside the tower under the bowl.  This does not affect water quality, it just looks gross.  When we budgeted for the cleaning and inspection of the inside of the tower for 2008, which we do every two years, we also wanted to get the outside cleaned.  McGuire Iron quoted us a price of almost $5,000 just to clean the outside.  The Fire Department, during one of their training sessions, used a deck gun and washed the mildew off.  Firefighter Dorine Rausch took pictures of this cleaning and we have them posted on the City Web site, click on Fire Department.  Thank You Fire Department! Job well done!

We had the Lake Wobegon marathon start in Holdingford, Saturday May 10th.  This is going to be an annual event with runners starting in Holdingford and running the 26.2 miles to St. Joseph.  I was very impressed by the way this event was organized, and by the dedication and passion of the people who participated in this run.  We had runners all the way from Newfoundland, Canada as well as other states in the US.  If this annual event would in time get the recognition as say, Grandma’s in Duluth or the Twin Cities Marathons, this could really put Holdingford and St. Joseph on the Map.  I would like to thank the local volunteers from our community who showed up at 6:15 A.M. to block streets in Holdingford so the participants could have a safe run down Main Street. Thank You!

This year the annual Caramel Roll bike run will be starting from Holdingford June 14, to take advantage of riding through the new Covered Bridge.  This bike run which is sponsored by The Lake Wobegon Trail Association, is an annual event that is growing in size ever year.  This is the first year it will be starting in Holdingford, and part of the money raised from this event will go toward the covered bridge.  If you would like to bike this event and eat those delicious Caramel rolls you can register by picking up an entry form in businesses that are located in cities on the Wobegon Trail or go to www.lakewobegontrails.com
You can save $5 if you register by May 20th.

June is Dairy month, and on June 14, the Commercial Club will again be sponsoring free ice cream, which will be served by the Dairy Princesses on Main Street in Holdingford.

We have finally found a good used street sweeper.  Because of the age and condition of our old sweeper it was time to upgrade.  The maintenance department found a reconditioned 1993 model that not only sweeps, but also has a vacuum for cleaning out manholes and catch basins along with a high pressure water sprayer.   I guess you could call it a multi-tasking machine!

Mayor’s Report For April 2008

Cheryl Foster from the Stearns County Assessor’s office has informed us we had 11 home sales in the City of Holdingford in 2007.  The majority of sales were less than the estimated market value of the property.  This is why the assessment statements you just received from the County show the majority of homes in the City will have a slight decline in market value.  The annual Board of Appeal and Equalization for the City of Holdingford will be Thursday,  May 8 at 7 p.m. at the City Center for anyone who feels their assessment is too high or too low and can show cause why it should be changed.  The Legislature this year has made changes in the property tax law for disabled Veterans that will take effect in 2009.  If you have a 70% to 99% service connected disability, the first $150,000 of your home value will be forgiven.  If you have 100% disability, the first $300,000 value of your home will be forgiven.  You need to call the County Assessor’s office at 656-3682 for more info and an application form.

Some good news, because of the modest growth we’ve been experiencing in 2007, our tax rate has again been lowered.  We are now down to 4th highest in Stearns County.

Several of our Fire and Rescue personnel received well deserved service awards.  Steve Ebnet, Steve Stoermann, and Gary Opatz each received an award for 20 years of service.  Keith Hommerding received an award for 15 years of service, Bruce Gerads and Jason Anderson each received an award for 10 years of service.  Steve Feldewerd, and Chad Sandstrom each received an award for 5 years of service.  On behalf of the City and Townships that are protected by the Holdingford Fire and Rescue, I would like to thank these eight members and all the members of the department for their time and dedication to saving lives and property in our community.  Thank You!

The covered bridge is still on track to be erected the first three weekends in May.  We are still looking for volunteers for the first Saturday, May 3rd to do wood staining and tree planting. Those interested in tree planting meet at the south end of Veteran’s Park where a temporary bridge will be across Two River River. Those interested in helping stain, please meet at the new Maintenance Shop. Both will start at 9 a.m.  Come on down and be a part of History.

We have hired a new maintenance technician to replace Herman.  His name is Jeremy Fruedenrich and he will hopefully be starting May 5, depending on the outcome of his background check and physical. We want him to train with Herman and Jerry so he hits the ground running when Herman retires in October.  Please welcome him; we feel he will be an asset to the City of Holdingford for many years to come.

The top of the sanitary sewer manhole on Gertrude Street broke apart and slid down the hill.  Larson Excavating had one on hand and installed it for us.  We also have a number of storm water catch basins on Main Street that need repair this year.  The maintenance department will work on these during the summer.

In the March Mayor’s report I stated we had a grant to do community computer training until the end of March.  I was wrong; this grant is good until the end of June.  If anyone wants some free one-on-one computer training please call the City Center at 746-2966.  Also remember we now have a computer in the City Center that anyone in the community can use.

The annual City Wide Clean up day will be Saturday, June 21, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon

Mayor’s Report For March 2008

Mark your calendars; the Holdingford Area Historical Society will be celebrating its one year anniversary with an open house, Monday April 7, at 7:00  p.m. in the Holdingford City Center.  You don’t have to be a member to help us celebrate, the public is invited.  There will be displays of Historical information along with pictures of the City and surrounding area for everyone to view.  Come and join us for some cake and fond memories.

Another date to mark on your calendars is Sunday, October 26 from 2 to 5:00 p.m. at the Holdingford American Legion Club.  That is the date and time of Herman Ebnets retirement party!  Herman will be retiring effective October 31, 2008 after 33 years of dedicated service to the City of Holdingford.  We are going to have a party to show our appreciation for all he has done for this community.  All of his friends in the City, Township, County and State are welcome to attend and wish him well.  We will have more details as we get closer to the event.  The City by law cannot use tax payer funds for events such as this, so we are looking for donations to offset the cost of food and a retirement gift.  If anyone is interested in donating please call the City Center at 746-2966

Members of the State Legislature Tax committee’s are wondering why many Minnesota residents who qualify for the two State property tax refund programs, don’t take advantage of them.  People should check both programs every year to see if they qualify.  Sometimes you may not qualify one year, but your situation and or the State programs can change, making you eligible the following year.  The City of Holdingford Web-site, www.holdingfordmn.us has links to the State Property Tax refund program web-sites it you want to check them out.

For those of you who don’t have a computer or access to the internet, the City of Holdingford is here to help.  The Helping Hands Outreach to Elders organization has received several surplus computers from the State and has graciously donated one to the City, THANK YOU HELPING HANDS!  This will be a community computer, available to anyone who wants to use it.  We have it set up in the hallway of the City Center and will soon have it hooked up to the internet.    For anyone who wants some computer training, we can help with that also.  We have some grant money available to us, through the Initiative Foundation earmarked for training purposes.  The bad news is we need to use this money by the end of March or we lose it, so if you would like some computer training, please call the City Center soon at 746-2966.

Because of repeated requests, the City of Holdingford has been working since the late nineties to get Natural Gas brought into the City.  This might be the year; we have sent letters to our State Legislators, the Public Utilities Commission and Excel Energy this past month, with the result being the possibility of having it brought in this summer.  We will keep you informed of the plans as they develop.

Mayor’s Report For February 2008

The covered bridge will soon be a reality!  Approximately twelve men of the Army Reserve Unit from Mankato came to Holdingford to meet with City officials, Area Organization members and Business owners to discuss the logistics of building the covered bridge.  As many of you know, the Army Reserve is providing the labor to build this bridge as a training exercise.  The rafter material will be trucked down to Mankato so the Army Reserve can assemble the rafters at their facility.  They have tentatively scheduled the first three weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in May as the times they will be in Holdingford to erect the bridge, and have stated they will bring in roughly 35 people each weekend to do the job.  Local organizations and restaurants are planning to set up meals for the troops, and instead of setting up tents, they plan to sleep in the Veterans Park Shelter, and using the showers at the school.  There might be some citizen involvement on this project such as wood staining; more information on that as we get closer to the build date.

The Lions Club is still diligently working on raising funds for the building materials for this covered bridge, and just about has enough to cover the cost of the bridge itself.  They want to also raise funds to build a parking area and handicap entry way to the bridge, so tourists don’t have to walk or bike the distance from Wobegon Park to see our bridge.  This parking area will be located on City property behind the Municipal Liquor store, with a handicap accessible walkway from the parking area up to the bridge.  Being 2008 is the State of Minnesota’s Sesquicentennial (150) anniversary we will name this area Sesquicentennial Historical Park.

The Lions Club and the City of Holdingford has jointly applied for and received a $3,000 grant from the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission to be used for Historical Plaques, which will be put along the walkway to commemorate the History of the Holdingford area.  Also in this area will be a placard honoring the organizations and individuals who donated funds and gave of their time to help make this Covered Bridge a reality. Please consider donating financially to this worthy project. It will be a boost for tourism for our community and add to the beautification of our town. You can make your checks out to the Holdingford Lions Club and can be sent to Joe Christensen, 38917 Timber Rd., Avon, MN 56310. Or it can be dropped off at the Stearns Bank.

I would like to publicly Thank the Lions Club for spearheading this project. They have spent many hours fundraising, planning, getting necessary permits, talking to County Boards, and wading through all the paperwork that our Federal Government can dish out to have the Army Reserve do this project.
Thank You Lions Club.

I will not be in my office Monday night February 18, as I will be going to the School Visioning session at Holdingford High School. Please consider joining me there for their visioning session  I will be in my office the following Monday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as usual.

Mayor’s Report For January 2008

The City of Holdingford’s first two weeks of 2008 has been rather expensive.  The first week a check valve in well #2 stuck open.  The pump and related plumbing had to be pulled out of the well so the check valve could be replaced with a new one.  Then the second week of the New Year, we had a water main break at the corner of Washington and Main.  This break happened on a water main that ran under a storm water catch basin.  So the catch basin had to be removed to get at the water main.  The good news is, the contractor was able to save the catch basin and reinstall it after the main was repaired.  Hopefully we have had our allotment of breakdowns for 2008, and not have another breakdown for the balance of the year.  Yeah right!

Now the good news, Stearns County Board of Soil and Water has reimbursed us one half the cost of closing Old Old Well #1.  This amounted to $1912.50.  Now I can say we are finally done with the well and pump project we started over a year ago.  At least I hope we don’t have any more surprises.

Mike Odden has come across something very interesting. A Paul La Blanc & Jordan Katon made a documentary movie called  Millions (a Lottery Story).”   It’s about people over the years who have won the lottery and how their lives have or have not changed after winning.  Some of the Holdingford Lottery winners are featured in this movie.   Nobody we know of has seen this documentary yet, but Mike has the movie preview on his web site: www.exit153.blogspot.com and a couple of the Holdingford ladies are in it.  Also movie reviewer Roger Ebert has viewed the film and has given it a thumbs up, and made some nice comments about the Holdingford Millionaires, Mike has his comments on the web-site also.  Hopefully someone will show this movie in the area.  If anyone knows of a showing please let us know, we would really like to see it.

The bills are all in for 2007 and it looks like we came in under budget.  That’s very good considering all the repairs we were able to accomplish in 2007.  For 2008 our goal is to repair some of the broken up sidewalks we have around the city.  How much we do will depend on how many more surprises we have that we did not budget for.  I look for it to be another good year.

I hate to do it, but I need to talk about dog licenses again.  All 2008 dog licenses are suppose to be purchased by January 1, 2008.  To date we have 56 people in the City of Holdingford who have done so.  Last year we had a total of 76, so there are some dog owners who have not yet purchased their canine license as of yet.  Please folks; this is a public safety issue, buying a license for your dog is the only way we have of knowing if your dog’s rabies vaccinations are up to date.  I’m sure none of us want to see anyone in the community get bit by a rabid dog.  Please come to the City Center and get this taken care of.

Respectfully submitted by Mayor Ernie Schmit
